Gold Shovel Standard (GSS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of buried infrastructure. They believe that buried infrastructure should be a collaborative act between the disparate industries of wastewater, water, telecommunications, electric, gas, and pipelines, thus reducing the risk of injury or line strikes. Leading industrial companies can apply for GSS membership, and contractors (excavators) can apply for certification. Often, hiring organizations will ask their excavators to become Gold Shovel certified before beginning a contract.
